When your teenager is terribly upset about something you feel is unimportant, here's what you can do:
  • Rather than provide a quick solution, try to listen very carefully and understand the problem as seen through their eyes.
  • Recognize that many times surface problems are really about self-image, acceptance and belonging.
  • Acknowledge the feeling instead of debating the facts.
If your teen remains upset, encourage a consultation with a professional such as a psychologist, guidance counselor or member of the clergy.

When you have lost your temper with your child, here's what you can do:
  • Apologize as soon as you can, and tell your child how sorry you are for your "grown-up tantrum."
  • Tell your child that you need a "time-out" until you can calm down.
  • Have a family conversation about other ways you could have handled your anger, and let your child give you some suggestions too.
Remember: We all want to be better parents - but kids don't come with an instruction manual.
