When your young child is about to start school, and is worried or anxious, here's what you can do:
  • Establish the "school routine" a few days before school actually starts: lay out clothing the night before, get up early, go to bed at a scheduled time.
  • Encourage your child to go to school with a buddy so the day starts out being comfortable and familiar.
  • Use dolls or action figures to "play school" and act out getting up in the morning, waiting for the school bus and being in the classroom.
Remember: We all want to be better parents - but kids don't come with an instruction manual.

If your child wants everything advertised on TV for the upcoming holidays, here's what you can do:
  • Encourage your child to make a huge wish list--but use this list as an opportunity to explain that we all want many things--but we can't always have them all
  • Discuss the items on the list, and help your child prioritize, based on the pros and cons of each item.
  • Help your child make wish lists for other members of the family to help develop the spirit of giving, not just getting.
Remember: We all want to be better parents - but kids don't come with an instruction manual.
