Self-esteem
confidence, worthiness, acceptance.
Experts all agree that self-esteem is the fundamental building block to success in your career, social relationships and family life. When self-esteem is low, it takes an enormous toll on the quality of your life.
Here are some interesting facts about self-esteem:
- Evidence indicates that an individual's self-esteem is formed during the pre-school years. Parenting style is a critical determinant of a young person's self-esteem.
- Self-esteem is only partially related to external circumstances. Beauty, money, intelligence and job success are related to but do not guarantee high self-esteem.
- Low self-esteem can be passed on to one's children - not through a defective gene, but through critical and negative parenting practices.
- Self-esteem problems may be pervasive and affect most areas of a person's life or they may be specific, affecting one very specific area of life.
- Self-esteem is modifiable. With effort and understanding, Self-esteem can be improved. Building your feelings of self-esteem is similar to learning a foreign language - you CAN do it, with patience and practice.
